{"id":327301,"date":"2010-02-16T13:53:18","date_gmt":"2010-02-16T18:53:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/?p=37846"},"modified":"2010-02-16T13:53:18","modified_gmt":"2010-02-16T18:53:18","slug":"nearly-37k-raised-for-haiti","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/327301","title":{"rendered":"Nearly $37K raised for Haiti"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The vibrant, dynamic performances at the Harvard for Haiti concert on Feb. 12 made for a stark contrast with the reality of the Jan. 12 earthquake disaster in Haiti.\u00a0But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.college.harvard.edu\/icb\/icb.do\">Harvard College<\/a> students raised almost $37,000 at their sold-out benefit show at Sanders Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>The production was wholly underwritten by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/\">Harvard University<\/a>, meaning all of the money raised will go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pih.org\/inforesources\/news\/Haiti_Earthquake.html\">Partners In Health<\/a>, a Harvard-affiliated nongovernmental organization that has been working in Haiti for more than 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>The concert, produced and performed by the students, featured performances that were varied in style but uniformly moving. Violinist Ryu Goto &#8216;10 played with such passion that he frayed his bow.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.africa.harvard.edu\/people_asg.html\">Pan-African Dance and Music Ensemble<\/a> got the audience moving and clapping along in their seats during a performance of &#8220;Drum Call.&#8221; Following a reflection by Harvard College Dean <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faculty.harvard.edu\/about-office\/history-office\/evelynn-m-hammonds-dean-harvard-college\">Evelynn Hammonds<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kuumbasingers.org\/\">Kuumba Singers<\/a> ended the evening with modern and traditional gospel songs about community and resilience.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders was filled to the rafters, as President Drew Faust noted in her welcoming remarks.\u00a0 But the audience extended far beyond the theater, as almost 3,500 watched live via <a href=\"http:\/\/ow.ly\/17vP4\">Webcast<\/a>.\u00a0 The online audience donated to the cause via the <a href=\"http:\/\/uc.fas.harvard.edu\/index.php?page=haiti\">Harvard for Haiti\u00a0 Web site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After the concert, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/group.php?gid=215458447879\">Student Alliance for Global Health<\/a> hosted a reception at the Queen\u2019s Head Pub in Harvard Yard to help concertgoers learn more about the health implications of the disaster and what else they can do get involved.<\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><del datetime=\"2010-02-16T13:36\" cite=\"mailto:Harvard%20University\"> <\/del><\/em><em>The University has established a relief fund for Harvard faculty and staff directly affected by the earthquake in Haiti.
