But little is \u2018easy\u2019 or \u2018expected\u2019 in this multilayered story of two brothers \u2013 one Korean, the other who chooses to become Korean American \u2013 and their scattered families whose lives converge in the perfectly blended east\/west house on a faraway Korean island. Unplanned and unexpected, Han Hyun-ku arrives at his younger brother\u2019s home, escaping his American life circumscribed by a detached wife and troubled son. His exhausted daughter Jane, a renowned photojournalist of death and destruction, follows her missing father. Strangers that they are even among family, father and daughter are gratefully absorbed into a seemingly easy rhythm, but the temporary peace cannot ease inevitable tragedy. \u201cSome people are not long for this world,\u201d Jane remarks. \u201cThe rest of us survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Verdict: <\/strong>Rea<strong><span style=\"font-weight:normal;\">ders who enjoyed superbly crafted, globetrotting family sagas such as Kamila Shamsie\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/bookdragon.si.edu\/2009\/04\/13\/burnt-shadows-by-kamia-shamsie\/\" >Burnt Shadows<\/a><\/em>, Naeem Murr\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/bookdragon.si.edu\/2008\/09\/19\/the-perfect-man-by-naeem-murr\/\" >The Perfect Man<\/a>, <\/em>or Chang-rae Lee\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/bookdragon.si.edu\/2000\/11\/15\/a-gesture-life-by-chang-rae-lee-author-interview\/\" >A Gesture Life<\/a><\/em> will swoon over Chung\u2019s breathtaking debut.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Review<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libraryjournal.com\/article\/CA6718445.html\" >&#8220;Fiction,&#8221; <em>Library Journal<\/em>, February 15, 2010<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tidbit<\/strong>: Chung&#8217;s got a haunting book trailer up &#8230; and it ends with a quote from ME!
