{"id":327477,"date":"2010-02-16T15:35:45","date_gmt":"2010-02-16T20:35:45","guid":{"rendered":"tag:typepad.com,2003:post-6a00d8341c630a53ef0120a8a7d454970b"},"modified":"2010-02-16T15:35:45","modified_gmt":"2010-02-16T20:35:45","slug":"pasadena-becomes-latest-city-to-debut-bike-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/327477","title":{"rendered":"Pasadena becomes latest city to debut bike plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">While Los Angeles <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/lanow\/2010\/02\/la-activists-float-idea-of-freeway-system-for-bikes.html\">vigorously debates<\/a> improvements to its bike infrastructure and Long Beach <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2010\/jan\/26\/local\/la-me-outthere26-2010jan26\">aims for the title of<\/a> \u201cthe most bicycle friendly city in America,\u201d Pasadena has released its own bike plan, which calls for nearly 20 miles of new bike lanes and paths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The $1.8-million plan would rely on federal and state grants to build 6.3 miles of new bike lanes and\u00a03.3 miles of new bike paths, and provide paint, pavement and sign upgrades for dozens of miles of other bikes lanes and routes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The plan includes less conventional ideas, such as \u201cemphasized bikeways,\u201d or preferred routes that take cyclists away from busy streets, and shared bike-car lanes called \u201csharrows.\u201d It also contains an idea bound to be controversial: Taking out lanes of traffic to erect diversion barriers to make more space for bicycles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Pasadena blueprint comes on the tail of efforts by cities such as Long Beach and Burbank to give cyclists safer passage through their cities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pasadena\u2019s overtures to cyclists are being greeted with cautious optimism by cycling advocates, who say the city is moving in the right direction in guaranteeing cyclists\u2019 safety but falling short in calling for enough protected bike lanes <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very good, and there\u2019s some connecting of gaps,\u201d said Dorothy Le, planning and policy director for the nonprofit Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition. \u201cBut now that there&#8217;s more cities trying to vie for more bike friendliness, Pasadena&#8217;s got to be a little more aggressive.&quot; <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ci.pasadena.ca.us\/transportation\/BikeMasterPlan\/\">bike plan<\/a> will be released to the public Feb. 23 during a meeting at Pasadena City Hall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&#8212; Tony Barboza<\/p>\n<div id=\"refHTML\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While Los Angeles vigorously debates improvements to its bike infrastructure and Long Beach aims for the title of \u201cthe most bicycle friendly city in America,\u201d Pasadena has released its own bike plan, which calls for nearly 20 miles of new bike lanes and paths.
