{"id":328424,"date":"2010-02-16T19:38:45","date_gmt":"2010-02-17T00:38:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chicagopressrelease.com\/press-releases\/sheriff-warns-area-residents-about-scams"},"modified":"2010-02-16T19:38:45","modified_gmt":"2010-02-17T00:38:45","slug":"sheriff-warns-area-residents-about-scams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/328424","title":{"rendered":"Sheriff warns area residents about scams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p>URBANA \u2014 Champaign County Sheriff Dan Walsh is warning area residents about the dangers of a telephone scam that cost a county woman nearly $90,000.<\/p>\n<p>Walsh said on Tuesday afternoon that the woman received telephone calls saying she won a lottery, but she needed to advance fees before she could receive the \u201cprize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walsh said the woman sent almost $90,000 to another country over several months before she reported the incident to police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found out about this toward the end of January, and it came to my attention,\u201d Walsh said.<br \/>\nWalsh said scammers frequently contact their victims by telephone, e-mail or regular mail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes the version is they won or have a lot of money in a foreign country but need your money to make things work,\u201d Walsh said. \u201cOf course, you will get rich when they share their money with you. No you won\u2019t.
