Homosexuality is often cast as a religious issue. Should religious<br \/>\nviews be a factor in military decisions? Should the U.S. military repeal its<br \/>\n&#8216;don&#8217;t ask, don&#8217;t tell&#8217; policy?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>All but one answer indicates strong support for repealing<br \/>\nthis discriminatory policy, which the Reform Movement has long opposed. The<br \/>\nresponses &#8211; from leaders of various faith communities &#8211; are heartening and<br \/>\nhopeful. Taylor<\/a>, co-founder of Muslims for Progressive Values<\/i><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The question for me is not<br \/>\nwhether &#8216;Don&#8217;t Ask, Don&#8217;t Tell&#8217; should be repealed, but why it&#8217;s<br \/>\ntaking so long. It is both unconstitutional and<br \/>\nun-American since it in fact denies equal protection under the law. To<br \/>\ndenigrate the humanity of another human being with both prejudice and ignorance<br \/>\nis hardly Christian either since it violates the purpose of Jesus, at least as<br \/>\nSt. John&#8217;s Gospel understands that purpose.&#8221;<br \/><i>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/newsweek.washingtonpost.com\/onfaith\/panelists\/john_shelby_spong\/2010\/02\/dont_ask_dont_tell.html\">John<br \/>\nShelby Spong<\/a>, Former Bishop, Episcopal Diocese of Newark<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course, support of repeal isn&#8217;t universal, as<br \/>\nevidenced by responses from <a href=\"http:\/\/newsweek.washingtonpost.com\/onfaith\/panelists\/charles_colson\/2010\/02\/repeal_would_hinder_military_effectiveness.html\">Rev.<br \/>\nChuck Colson<\/a>, who says repeal would hinder military effectiveness, but it&#8217;s<br \/>\nencouraging to see leaders of so many faiths speaking out in favor of doing<br \/>\naway with this antiquated and discriminatory policy.
