At a brief event billed as a \u201cmeet and greet\u201d between Peoria School District 150\u2019s finalist for school superintendent and members of the media, Grenita Lathan called on the community to get behind the schools.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring the coming months you will hear me speak a lot about Team Peoria \u2014 it will take all of us working together as a team to improve our schools,\u201d said Lathan, 40, currently an interim deputy superintendent at California\u2019s San Diego Unified School District.<\/p>\n

Lathan was among several candidates discovered during a nationwide search by Chicago-based Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates and made it through an interview process by a Peoria area community search committee, chaired by Illinois Central College President John Erwin. School Board members made their selection earlier this month.<\/p>\n

Board President Debbie Wolfmeyer said final details of a contract for Lathan\u2019s employment still are being worked out, including salary and length, but said Lathan \u201chas the full support of the board.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lathan took no questions from the media and stuck to a prepared statement.<\/p>\n
