“I dreamed about the pool (Monday) night,” Commissioner Sue Bertram said. “It’s the hardest decision I’ve had to make in 18 years on the board. The only thing to feel good about is we did all we could to keep it open as long as we could.”<\/p>\n
Board president Bob Haderlein said it came down to simple finances – trying to run two pools, both of which have lost a combined $729,000 since 2001. The park district also operates Lions Club Pool in Homewood.<\/p>\n
“I didn’t dream about the pool, but I laid awake (Monday) night thinking about this tough decision,” Haderlein said. “We have to look at the reality of the situation. This is what we have to do.”<\/p>\n
After the meeting, park district executive director Debbie Kopas said the district will talk to several excavators about removing Dolphin Lake Pool. Immediate plans are to turn the site into green space.<\/p>\n
“We’ll survey the public up the line to see what they want to do with the pool site in the future,” Kopas said.<\/p>\n
