They did not suggest a possible cause of the decrease.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The redwoods along our coast are highly dependent on fog as a source of water during the summer when water in the ground is scarce,&#8221; said Todd Dawson, a co-author of the study. &#8220;Foggy nights are needed to rehydrate the trees that can&#8217;t tolerate long droughts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The article was published online today in the <em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>While the reduced fog would be unlikely to kill off mature redwoods, it could prevent seeds from sprouting and saplings from growing to maturity, Dawson said.
