She said when it comes to childhood obesity, \u201cWe have everything we need right now to help our kids lead healthy lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s askew is her \u2014 and evidently The Seattle Times\u2019 \u2014 perception of just who \u201cwe\u201d refers to. It\u2019s not food suppliers, schools or the federal government. It\u2019s the kids\u2019 parents for goodness sake! I cannot believe the words parent, mom or dad don\u2019t appear once in this entire editorial. What is happening to our society?<\/p>\n<p>The more we look to government to fill the void of personal accountability the further we\u2019ll get from accomplishing our ends. And does it strike anyone else as ironic that we\u2019re looking to the very federal government that can\u2019t control its own bloated spending appetite to impose such will on our children?<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014 Stu Haas, Seattle<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kick smoking habits too<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Childhood obesity is certainly a problem worth tackling. Americans don\u2019t eat healthy foods and we\u2019re increasingly sedentary.<\/p>\n<p>But tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of disease, disability and death in the United States and I\u2019m disappointed that our first lady is not addressing it with equal fervor.
