{"id":332513,"date":"2010-02-17T17:16:14","date_gmt":"2010-02-17T22:16:14","guid":{"rendered":"tag:www.armscontrolwonk.com,2010-02-17:57f256023a9af1385990be02cc9db91e\/ffb6773f11f1790594b9b9603f5b03db"},"modified":"2010-02-17T17:16:14","modified_gmt":"2010-02-17T22:16:14","slug":"report-on-french-nuclear-testing-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/332513","title":{"rendered":"Report on French Nuclear Testing [9]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sacrebleu!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve never seen a classified French document before, but this one is a doozy.  <\/p>\n<p>Bruno Barrillot &#8212;who I have just discovered has written a lot about French nuclear testing, how did I miss this? &#8212; somehow obtained, and published, a confidential history of France&#8217;s nuclear program, entitled <em>Report on French Nuclear Testing (1960-1996)<\/em>.  It appears this is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.obsarm.org\/essais-nucleaires.pdf\">Volume 1: Organizational Genesis and Experiments in Sahara<\/a>.  Presumably there is a second volume for the period after testing moved to the South Pacific in 1968.<\/p>\n<p>Barrillot released the document as part of the push for his book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.obsarm.org\/\">Victimes des essais nucl\u00e9aires: histoire<br \/>\nd&#8217;un combat<\/a>, on France&#8217;s atomic veterans. Nicolas Jacquard in Le Parisien <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leparisien.fr\/faits-divers\/quand-les-appeles-du-contingent-servaient-de-cobayes-16-02-2010-817293.php\">writes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Intitul\u00e9 : \u00ab la Gen\u00e8se de l\u2019organisation et les exp\u00e9rimentations au Sahara \u00bb, ce texte r\u00e9dig\u00e9 par un ou des militaires anonymes daterait de 1998, juste apr\u00e8s l\u2019abandon d\u00e9finitif des essais par Jacques Chirac. Il y \u00e9voque avec emphase \u00ab une grande aventure scientifique \u00bb, tout en jugeant \u00ab inopportun d\u2019en extraire une synth\u00e8se grand public. \u00bb A sa lecture, on comprend ais\u00e9ment pourquoi, chaque ligne du rapport expliquant comment scientifiques et militaires veulent, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, obtenir \u00ab la bombe \u00bb, quel que soit le prix \u00e0 payer, y compris humain. Gerboise verte, le quatri\u00e8me et dernier tir dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re, fait ainsi jouer les appel\u00e9s du contingent \u00e0 une v\u00e9ritable guerre nucl\u00e9aire grandeur nature. Souvent, les v\u00e9t\u00e9rans se plaignaient d\u2019avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 des cobayes. C\u2019est d\u00e9sormais une certitude.<\/p>\n<p>Quant aux \u00ab faibles doses \u00bb re\u00e7ues qu\u2019\u00e9voque le ministre de la D\u00e9fense, elles sont \u00e0 l\u2019origine de maladies irr\u00e9versibles. \u00ab Que dans le contexte de l\u2019\u00e9poque, on fasse des manoeuvres, on peut en discuter, r\u00e9sume Patrice Bouveret. Mais que tout cela soit fait sans aucune prise en compte sociale ou m\u00e9dicale des hommes, c\u2019est quasi criminel. \u00bb<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The important phrases here are &#8220;cobayes&#8221; (guinea pigs) and &#8220;quasi criminel&#8221; (almost criminal).<\/p>\n<p>But the document is <em>also<\/em> fascinating from an historical perspective, providing information about the early French nuclear program.<\/p>\n<p>Check it out. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~r\/acw\/~4\/eDRx0hlXMrM\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sacrebleu!
