I didn&#8217;t know that one day your kin would be our nuke-detecting salvation.<\/p>\n<p>Nuclear engineers from Texas A&#038;M, who clearly are less squeamish than I am, have attached radioactivity sensors to the backs of cockroaches. Oh, sorry, to the backs of <em>remote-controlled<\/em> cockroaches, which sounds like the start of a wonderful prank. It turns out that the little buggers are perfectly suited to the task of locating nuclear material:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Cockroaches really are the perfect medium for this,&#8221; says William Charlton, an associate professor of nuclear engineering at the university and a principal investigator on the project. &#8220;They can go for extraordinarily long periods of time without food. They exist on every continent except Antarctica. They&#8217;re very radiation resistant, and they can carry extremely large amounts of weight compared to their body mass.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That&#8217;s right: instead of sending humans into possibly contaminated areas, we&#8217;re sending our army of roaches. And we&#8217;re not stopping there! According to the Texas A&#038;M researchers, other applications could include search and rescue and counterintelligence. And scaring the bejeebus out of rival scientists.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0116707\/\"><em>Joe&#8217;s Apartment<\/em><\/a> is another <a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/5453687\/seven-futuristic-movies-that-got-it-right\">movie ahead of its time<\/a>.
