These applications provide pretty basic protection against unwanted calls. You can block specific numbers, block unknown numbers, block private numbers, or block all calls during certain times. Configured properly, they can prevent telemarketers from reaching you while allowing the calls you want to receive to pass through like normal. For some people, however, privacy is a bit more serious issue. If you’d like a bit more information about the unknown numbers calling you, there’s a new BlackBerry application that can help you out.

Like the other call blocking applications, PrivacyStar allows you to keep away unwanted calls. You can select these numbers by finding them on your call log, or otherwise entering them manually. You also have the option to block all private or unknown callers, which helps if you’re just too curious to pick up those calls.

PrivacyStar adds three features beyond the other call blockers we’ve covered.

Easy reporting of Do Not Call violators. I’m not sure exactly how effective this will be, though my guess is that it won’t help much. It’s still a comforting feature, and something other applications do not have.

Integration with web portal. You can manage your call block lists both from the application on your BlackBerry smartphone and from your computer via PrivacyStar’s web portal. It’s nothing revolutionary, but certainly another place you can manage your account and privacy settings.

Reverse look-up. This is probably the most valuable of the additions. When you receive a call from a number you do not recognize, you can look it up through PrivacyStar’s directory. That sounds particularly helpful in identifying stalkers and other ruffians looking to harass you.

With additional features, of course, comes an additional cost. The application is free, but the service costs $2.99 per month. Again, if you want only the basic features, I recommend a cheaper application like Do Not Disturb. That should take care of most call blocking issues. But if you’re plagued by junk calls and want to do something about it, perhaps PrivacyStar is worth a try. You can get PrivacyStar from the BBGeeks Store and see if it fits your call blocking needs.

Note: PrivacyStar is also available through the BBGeeks App Store which can be downloaded here.

This post originated at BBGeeks.com – home to all things Blackberry!
