During his third press conference last week, Toyota’s CEO Akio Toyoda said that he will not appear before U.S. lawmakers at hearings<\/a> scheduled for later this month. Toyoda said he wasn’t planning on attending but would consider appearing before Congress if he was invited.<\/p>\n

Well, a congressional committee sent out an invitation to Toyoda today to testify at its hearing next week on the automaker’s recalls, which now total 8.5 million vehicles globally. Toyoda has been asked to respond to the invitation by 5 p.m. ET on Friday.<\/p>\n

Toyoda said last week that the company’s U.S. executive Yoshi Inaba, who heads up Toyota Motor Corp.\u2019s U.S. unit, was more familiar with the recalls and was the best man to be at the hearing.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Toyoda previously said that he plans on making a trip to the U.S. to meet with company workers and dealers.<\/p>\n
