Costa Mesa took on the expansion project more than a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA<br \/>\nlot of people think traffic is good for business, but too much traffic<br \/>\nand congested traffic is not good for business,\u201d Peter Naghavi, Costa Mesa\u2019s director of public services, said. \u201cIf I\u2019m<br \/>\na loyal customer near there and it takes me half an hour to get there<br \/>\nevery time, I\u2019m going to find another place where there isn\u2019t too much<br \/>\ntraffic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About 100,000 cars unload from the <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2008\/mar\/24\/local\/me-freeway24\">southbound 55<br \/>\nFreeway<\/a> onto Newport Boulevard daily, with about half going to local<br \/>\ndestinations and the other half traveling to Newport Beach, Huntington Beach and other cities, Naghavi said. <\/p>\n<p>Although there<br \/>\nare seven lanes, they are not enough to prevent jams because the street<br \/>\neventually narrows.
