Andrea Fay Friedman, the actress who played Ellen on an episode of Family Guy<\/em> that Republican Sarah Palin claims mocks her special needs son, is sounding off on the controversy. Like Ellen and Sarah’s 22-month-old son Trig, Friedman, 39, has Down syndrome. In an e-mail sent to The New York Times<\/a><\/em> on Thursday, Friedman implored the former GOP VP candidate to try tickling her funny bone and quit taking things so seriously.<\/p>\n

“I guess former Governor Palin does not have a sense of humor. I thought the line ‘I am the daughter of the former governor of Alaska’ was very funny. I think the word is ’sarcasm.’ In my family we think laughing is good. My parents raised me to have a sense of humor and to live a normal life…..”<\/em><\/p>\n

Friedman went on to say that “My mother did not carry me around under her arm like a loaf of French bread the way former Governor Palin carries her son Trig around looking for sympathy and votes.”<\/em>
\nShe added that she “was making fun of Sarah Palin, but not her son.” <\/em><\/p>\n

The actress, who also appeared on the ABC family drama Life Goes On<\/em> in the early ’90s told The Times that she is “proud” of playing a character with Down syndrome.<\/p>\n

The Palins, on the other hand, are incensed over Sunday’s episode of the program, which sees Chris dating a mentally-challenged classmate with an ego the size of Texas. In a statement, Palin’s teen mom daughter Bristol slammed the FOX animated comedy: “Shouldn’t we be willing to say that some things just are not funny? Are there any limits to what some people will do or say in regards to my little brother or others in the special needs community?” <\/em><\/p>\n
