{"id":344547,"date":"2010-02-20T12:24:51","date_gmt":"2010-02-20T17:24:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=2131"},"modified":"2010-02-20T12:24:51","modified_gmt":"2010-02-20T17:24:51","slug":"agreementfail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/344547","title":{"rendered":"AgreementFail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here is one of today&#8217;s top <a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/~bgzimmer\/LovesToHate.png\">headlines<\/a> on the <a href=\"http:\/\/hosted.ap.org\/dynamic\/stories\/U\/US_REPUBLICANS_2012?SITE=AP&amp;SECTION=HOME&amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&amp;CTIME=2010-02-20-10-56-07\">AP wire<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/~bgzimmer\/LovesToHate.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/~bgzimmer\/goploves.gif\" alt=\"GOP's 2012 hopefuls crowd town they loves to hate\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The same headline is currently being used online by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/02\/20\/AR2010022001278.html\">Washington Post<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/politics\/2008\/articles\/2010\/02\/20\/gops2012_hopefuls_crowd_town_they_loves_to_hate\/\">Boston Globe<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/content.usatoday.net\/dist\/custom\/gci\/InsidePage.aspx?cId=theleafchronicle&amp;sParam=32853057.story\">USA Today<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/feedarticle\/8954752\">Guardian<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20100220\/ap_on_el_pr\/us_republicans2012\">Yahoo News<\/a>, and many other news sites. The Twitterati were, of course, quick to pick up on the grammar problem (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/oneswellfoop\/statuses\/9389980455\">here,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/trumpetbob15\/statuses\/9390551187\">here<\/a>). It&#8217;s been <strike>to<\/strike> corrected to &#8220;&#8230;love to hate&#8221; by a few outlets already, however (like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chron.com\/disp\/story.mpl\/politics\/6876847.html\">Houston Chronicle<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Hard to say how this one slipped by so many editorial eyes. Perhaps an earlier version of the headline had &#8220;loves to hate&#8221; agreeing with &#8220;(the) GOP,&#8221; such as &#8220;2012 hopefuls crowd town GOP loves to hate,&#8221; and then a last-minute change in word order loused up the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>[Possible background influences for the verb choice range from Gershwin (&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/I_Loves_You_Porgy\">I Loves You Porgy<\/a>&#8220;) to Gollum (&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0167261\/quotes?qt0469204\">We wants it, we needs it<\/a>&#8220;).]<\/p>\n<p>[Update, 4 pm EST: The <a href=\"http:\/\/hosted.ap.org\/dynamic\/stories\/U\/US_REPUBLICANS_2012?SITE=AP&#038;SECTION=HOME&#038;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&#038;CTIME=2010-02-20-10-56-07\">AP<\/a> has now corrected the headline.]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here is one of today&#8217;s top headlines on the AP wire: The same headline is currently being used online by the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, USA Today, the Guardian, Yahoo News, and many other news sites.
