{"id":345966,"date":"2010-02-21T11:14:51","date_gmt":"2010-02-21T16:14:51","guid":{"rendered":"tag:typepad.com,2003:post-6a00d8341c630a53ef01310f25a7f3970c"},"modified":"2010-02-21T11:16:38","modified_gmt":"2010-02-21T16:16:38","slug":"court-to-decide-fate-of-newport-beach-couples-beachfront-picnic-spot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/345966","title":{"rendered":"Court to decide fate of Newport Beach couple&#8217;s beachfront picnic spot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a six-year legal battle with the California Coastal Commission,<br \/>\nthe fate of a retired Corona del Mar couple\u2019s beachfront picnic spot<br \/>\nand thatched palapa lies with California&#8217;s 4th District Court of Appeal.<\/p>\n<p>A Santa Ana courthouse was packed with supporters of Ocean Boulevard<br \/>\nresidents George and Sharlee McNamee on Thursday as a three-judge panel<br \/>\nheard arguments in the couple\u2019s case, which has grown from a<br \/>\nsquabble over a barbecue and some picnic tables into a fight between<br \/>\nthe rights of private property owners versus the public\u2019s access to the<br \/>\nbeach.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cI\u2019d really lose a lot of respect for the court if they<br \/>\nrule against them,\u201d said Hank Reuter, 14, the McNamees&#8217; grandson, who<br \/>\nattended the hearing with his family, wearing his Boy Scout uniform. \u201cIt<br \/>\nshould be up to you what you want to do with your private property.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The Coastal Commission ordered the McNamees to tear down their beach oasis<br \/>\nin 2004. Set on a private portion of beach at the base of a cliff above<br \/>\nCorona del Mar State Beach, the McNamees\u2019 patch of sand includes two<br \/>\npicnic tables, a shower and bathroom, storage lockers, a built-in<br \/>\nbarbecue, palapa and some flowering plants.
