{"id":351848,"date":"2010-02-22T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-02-22T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"tag:www.mindhacks.com:\/\/aae56193c0e86f600231ab34c32487c4"},"modified":"2010-02-22T03:00:00","modified_gmt":"2010-02-22T08:00:00","slug":"mindful-of-langer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/351848","title":{"rendered":"Mindful of Langer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"left\" class=\"left\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mindhacks.com\/blog\/files\/2010\/02\/langer.jpg\" width=\"90\" height=\"135\" \/><i>The Boston Globe<\/i> has an excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/bostonglobe\/ideas\/articles\/2010\/02\/21\/mind_power\/\">profile<\/a> of psychologist <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ellen_Langer\">Ellen Langer<\/a>, responsible for some of the most influential studies in psychology and a champion of &#8216;mindfulness&#8217; as an approach to a happier life.<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, she&#8217;s become a doyenne of the positive psychology movement, and, as the article notes, occasionally comes across as slightly guru-like.<\/p>\n<p>Her research remains impressive, however, and when reading through the article I found myself saying &#8220;I never knew that was one of Langer&#8217;s studies&#8221; several times.<\/p>\n<p>These include studies <a href=\"http:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/index.cfm?fa=buy.optionToBuy&#038;id=1977-03333-001&#038;CFID=6359334&#038;CFTOKEN=96125741\">finding<\/a> that people are much more attached to lottery numbers when they are allowed to choose them &#8211; even though this makes no difference to the final outcomes (the &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Illusion_of_control\">illusion of control<\/a>&#8216;), and <a href=\"http:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/index.cfm?fa=buy.optionToBuy&#038;id=1979-23568-001&#038;CFID=6359334&#038;CFTOKEN=96125741\">one<\/a> where giving a nonsense excuse to cut in line to use a photocopier was as effective as giving a reasonable excuse.<\/p>\n<p>And of course, she&#8217;s well-known for her <a href=\"http:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/index.cfm?fa=buy.optionToBuy&#038;id=1979-29338-001&#038;CFID=6359334&#038;CFTOKEN=96125741\">studies<\/a> on how giving residents in a nursing home for old people more control over the environment improved their well-being.<\/p>\n<p>For many years she has become interested in mindfulness, although it&#8217;s never really been clear to me that she means more than simply &#8216;think more about what&#8217;s going on&#8217; as it seems to be a little different from the concept of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mindfulness_%28psychology%29\">mindfulness<\/a> taken from Buddhism and now an evidence-based component of many psychological treatments.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, Hollywood studio Universal Pictures are to make a film of Langer&#8217;s ageing studies and Jennifer Aniston has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/film\/2006\/oct\/18\/news\">chosen<\/a> to play the Harvard psychologist.
