{"id":352139,"date":"2010-02-23T00:02:49","date_gmt":"2010-02-23T05:02:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/openwidelookinside\/archives\/2420"},"modified":"2010-02-23T00:02:49","modified_gmt":"2010-02-23T05:02:49","slug":"teaching-economics-with-children%e2%80%99s-literature-making-cents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/352139","title":{"rendered":"Teaching Economics with Children\u2019s Literature: Making Cents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Making-Cents-Elizabeth-Keeler-Robinson\/dp\/1582462143\/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_a\" title=\"Making Cents\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" width=\"185\" src=\"http:\/\/images.barnesandnoble.com\/images\/38810000\/38815708.JPG\" alt=\"Book Cover\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Making-Cents-Elizabeth-Keeler-Robinson\/dp\/1582462143\/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_a\" title=\"Making Cents\">Making Cents<\/a>, written by Elizabeth Keeler Robinson and illustrated by Bob McMahon,\u00a0gives young readers ideas about some of the items they can purchase with a penny\u00a0going all the way up to a one hundrend dollar bill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The children in the book want to make a clubhouse.\u00a0 They will need to save money and\u00a0learn what they can purchase with every amount.\u00a0 The book starts off explaing that 1 penny can buy a perfect nail.\u00a0 The amount adds up to a $100 dollar bill; which the children have the choice to purchase 10,000 nails\u00a0or plywood sheets, 2 x 4&#8217;s, a hammer and a saw.\u00a0 Each page starts off by adding the previous coin or bill\u00a0by a certain number to make up the next demonation.\u00a0 An example would be:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Soon we&#8217;ll have two tens, and they&#8217;ll add up to a&#8230;Twenty-dollar bill! Andrew Jackson&#8217;s on the front and that&#8217;s that White House on the back. It&#8217;s worth two thousand cents, but it&#8217;s easier to carry. That twenty-dollar bill can buy..&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The children have have doing things throughout the book to earn money.\u00a0 They have a lemonade stand, sell items at a yard sale, wash windows &amp; deliver the newspaper to name a few.\u00a0 The final page shows all of the children playing on the clubhouse that was built with the money that they had worked so hard for.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Curriculum Connections<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Making Cents would be an excellent book to use as part of an economics lesson related to people need to have money in order to purchase goods.\u00a0 The book is realistic with what each amount of money can actually purchase in today&#8217;s economy.\u00a0 It is simple enough to be read to 1st graders all the way up to\u00a03rd grade.\u00a0 After reading the story, students could think about what they would build if they had a certain amount of money and then journal about it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Virgina, Making Cents can be used in the social studies SOLs 1.9, 2.8 &amp; 3.9.\u00a0 The SOLs explain that people can save money for future purchases of good and services.\u00a0 As well as economic costs when making a purchase.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional Resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Here a link that teachers can use for <a href=\"http:\/\/business.pppst.com\/economics.html\" title=\"Economics for Kids\">PowerPoint presentations <\/a>for their students.\u00a0 The presentations are free and range from good &amp; services to wants &amp; needs.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/store.councilforeconed.org\/elementaryschool.html\" title=\"Council for Economic Education\">Council for Economic Education<\/a> has listed several tools that teachers can purchase to help aid in the teaching of economics.\u00a0 The tools that are available for purchase can also be used to tie the lesson in with language arts.<\/li>\n<li>Teachers can use the interactive worksheets from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moneyinstructor.com\/wsp\/goods.asp\" title=\"Good &amp; Services Lesson\">Goods &amp; Services Lesson <\/a>as a support to the economic content.
