Gary has 31 years of experience at SME with responsibilities including conferencing, tradeshows, membership and training.<\/p>\n<p>Fine art is going to be a part of this year&#8217;s Rapid show through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sculptcadrapidartists.com\/\" >SculptCAD Rapid Artists Project<\/a>, an effort that combines the creativity of working visual artists with the cutting edge of 3D modeling, 3D visualization, rapid prototyping and digital sculpture tools. SculptCAD&#8217;s Nancy Hairston is spearheading the project and is participating as an artist.<\/p>\n<p>This interview with Mikola is the second of many coming blog posts about the SculptCAD Rapid Artists Project (you can <a href=\"http:\/\/davidkirkpatrick.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/10\/the-sculptcad-rapid-artists-project\/\" >find the first post here<\/a>) and is the first interview with a project principal. Future posts include a discussion with Hairston on her artwork and her work as a 3D industry leader, and posts with individual participating artists covering how they are approaching the technology. Hopefully future posts will include some sneak previews of the art being created in this fusion of fine art and high technology.<\/p>\n<p>And without further delay, here&#8217;s the interview with SME&#8217;s Gary Mikola:<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size:small;\">I understand SME is interested in the intersection of fine art and technologies like rapid prototyping, additive manufacturing, 3D visualization\/modeling, etc. (I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;ve left some tech areas out of that short list.) What would you like to see in the future in terms of integrating SME and fine art? What comes next after RAPID 2010 and the SculptCAD RAPID ARTISTS Project?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\">SME is fortunate to have dedicated members<\/span> <span style=\"font-size:small;\">and<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> event advisers<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> including<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> the <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Rapid <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Technologies and Additive Manufacturing (RTAM)<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> group<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">. RTAM <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">advocated the addition of <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">a <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">presentation addressing the use of the<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> technology applied to art. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Most recently, <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">many <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">prominent artists<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">, including speaker Bathsheba Grossman,<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> have associated with and use<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">d<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> the technology to create and present art.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Tell me a little about the genesis of making fine art a part of RAPID 2010?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\">A <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">tension <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">exists <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">between design engineers and m<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">anufacturing engineers. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Starting with concurrent engineering philosophy to present, the task of manufacturing products designed by someone outside of manufacturing has slowed product to market. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">RAPID will be an outlet for engineers from both camps to come together and turn ideas and designs into reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Artists have an ability to think outside the lines of traditional concepts<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> C<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">ontemporary art exemplifies that.<\/span> <span style=\"font-size:small;\">The challenge of c<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">reating products that appeal to all kinds of markets and <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">multiple<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> applications<\/span> <span style=\"font-size:small;\">presents<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> a catalyst <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">for change <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">for design and manufacturing engineers<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">he SculptCAD Rapid Artists projects <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">here <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">at RAPID <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">will <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">introduce this <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">concept to a wider range of <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">people. We have confidence <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">that <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">the SculptCAD Rapid Artists Project <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">will be<\/span> <span style=\"font-size:small;\">a<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> beginning<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">, expanding<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> thinking<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> and creating future applications<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Looking toward this year&#8217;s show, how did Nancy Hairston (VanDuzen, SculptCAD) and the SculptCAD RAPID ARTISTS Project get involved with RAPID 2010?<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> Did you know <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Nancy<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> before this project?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\">SME <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">members<\/span> <span style=\"font-size:small;\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Technical Advis<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">e<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">rs Kevin Ayers<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">, FBI a<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">nd Vesna Cota<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">, Tyco Electronics Canada<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">were <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">instrumental in pushing for the inclusion of art at <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">RAPID. After Kevin introduced SME to <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Nancy<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">, we formalized the <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">inclusion of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">SculptCAD Rapid Artists Project at our event. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Nancy<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> also contributed ideas to promote the <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Contemporary<\/span> <span style=\"font-size:small;\">Art<\/span> <span style=\"font-size:small;\">Gallery<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> at RAPID.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Going beyond the fine art element, give me the quick overview of this year&#8217;s RAPID show. What really excites you about RAPID 2010?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\">RAPID 2010 will bring manufacturing professionals, designers and even artists together to view, explore and discuss new innovations in 3D scanning and rapid prototyping technology. Exhibits, keynotes and presentations will illustrate applications in aerospace and defense; automotive; arts and entertainment, including games; medicine; and sports and recreation. Buyers and end-users of design, prototyping, tooling and direct manufacturing equipment will get a chance to compare processes, talk to industry experts and participate in more than 70 technical presentations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\">A few examples<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> of really exciting stuff <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">to see <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">at RAPID 2010<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Medical presentations will explore uses of additive manufacturing for organ replacement, prosthetics, spinal injuries and even eye lenses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">The Arts and Entertainment track will show how additive manufacturing can create special effects for movies, produce new types of sculptures and develop video games for education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">In the Aerospace and Defense track, speakers will discuss rapid prototyping for airplane parts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Presentations in the automotive\/motor vehicle session will cover the technology\u2019s application for machining and tooling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">An interactive session will use social media to solicit questions before the event and a panel of experts will review and answer them in a live broadcast<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\">We <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">also <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">have outstanding keynote presenters that will start the conference daily. And<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> as always<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> the technology on the show floor will provide an experience that enhance<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> one<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">s knowledge of the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\">We are also excited to be in <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Anaheim<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> at the Disneyland Hotel. Walt Disney was an individual with an amazing imagination. He contributed much to our creative thinking as a county and to the development of American culture. Our industry supports art and creativity in a similar way.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Do you have any final thoughts on SME and fine art?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:small;\">Personally, I love art. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">My early training as an industrial arts instructor taught me the value of using <\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\">your<\/span><span style=\"font-size:small;\"> hands as a learning tool. In that environment, a student is encouraged to be creative; mixing that with traditional industrial skills.
