{"id":355424,"date":"2010-02-23T17:41:00","date_gmt":"2010-02-23T21:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18884161.post-5645806992570916372"},"modified":"2010-03-17T18:46:10","modified_gmt":"2010-03-17T22:46:10","slug":"voodoo-history-part-3-sense-about-science-means-freedom-to-criticise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/355424","title":{"rendered":"Voodoo History Part 3: Sense about Science means freedom to criticise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/libelreform.org\/\">Libel Reform Campaign &#8211; Free Speech Is Not For Sale<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><b>A representative case: Suppression of science<\/b><\/div>\n<div><b>Claimant: British Chiropractic Association (BCA), UK<\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Respondent: Simon Singh, journalist and author, UK<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Simon Singh, the best-selling author of <i>Fermat\u2019s Last Theorem<\/i> and <i>The Code Book<\/i>, published an article in the <i>Guardian<\/i> in April 2008 in which he discussed chiropractic treatment with reference to the British Chiropractic Association.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In a passage describing the BCA\u2019s claims about the treatment of a number of childhood ailments, Singh wrote that \u2018even though there is not a jot of evidence\u2019 the BCA \u2018happily promotes bogus treatments\u2019.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Despite the article being published in the <i>Guardian<\/i>, Singh was sued personally.<br \/><a name='more'><\/a> Mr Justice Eady decided on the issue of meaning in May 2009, and found that Singh\u2019s comments were statements of fact, rather than expressions of opinion, which implied that the BCA was being deliberately dishonest. It was a meaning that Singh has said he never intended. Eady refused to grant leave to appeal, although permission was granted by the Court of Appeal itself in October 2009.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As a result of this case, the charity <i>Sense About Science<\/i> launched a petition for libel reform.
