A mass layoff is when a single employer terminates at least 50 people.<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturing employers laid off 104,846 workers in mass layoffs in January, not adjusted for seasonal variations, and construction companies terminated 24,148 workers.<\/p>\n<p>The upside is that the mass layoffs picture still looks better than it did a year ago. The number of mass layoff events was nearly 23% lower than the same month a year ago. And the number of people fired as part of those layoffs was down nearly 28%.<\/p>\n<p>The improvement in the past year has been widespread.
