{"id":357245,"date":"2010-02-23T21:45:57","date_gmt":"2010-02-24T02:45:57","guid":{"rendered":"tag:typepad.com,2003:post-6a00d8341c630a53ef01310f31ffda970c"},"modified":"2010-02-23T21:45:57","modified_gmt":"2010-02-24T02:45:57","slug":"uc-san-diego-temporarily-closes-campus-tv-station-after-racial-slur","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/357245","title":{"rendered":"UC San Diego temporarily closes campus TV station after racial slur"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN\"><span lang=\"EN\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">UC San Diego\u2019s student government has temporarily shut down a campus television channel and suspended funding for 16 or so media outlets because of a student show that used a racial epithet for African Americans. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The actions, criticized by free speech advocates, came as UC San Diego was reeling from news that some students had organized an off-campus party Feb. 15 that mocked Black History Month and invited participants to dress as ghetto stereotypes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Then, on\u00a0a\u00a0television segment\u00a0last week,\u00a0members of a controversial student satire group used the racial slur and described blacks as &quot;ungrateful&quot;\u00a0in a discussion\u00a0of the party and the campus response to it. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Associated Students President Utsav Gupta\u00a0suspended the campus station and said he needed to temporarily stop funding the other media outlets\u00a0while new rules are written to ensure that student fees do not support hate speech.
