{"id":357478,"date":"2010-02-24T00:24:47","date_gmt":"2010-02-24T05:24:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=2137"},"modified":"2010-02-24T00:24:47","modified_gmt":"2010-02-24T05:24:47","slug":"radioaesthetics-and-ultimatonic-field-patterning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/357478","title":{"rendered":"Radioaesthetics and ultimatonic field patterning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ben Goldacre recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.badscience.net\/2010\/01\/oh-i-found-you-a-new-job\/\">featured<\/a> this lovely job advertisement:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/MapertonJob.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Click to embiggen\" src=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/MapertonJob.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span id=\"more-2137\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A couple of the words were new to me: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?hl=en&amp;q=radioaesthetics&amp;btnG=Search&amp;aq=f&amp;aqi=&amp;aql=&amp;oq=\">radioaesthetics<\/a><\/em> turns out to mean &#8220;dowsing&#8221;, basically; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?hl=en&amp;q=ultimatonic&amp;aq=f&amp;aqi=&amp;aql=&amp;oq=\">ultimatonic<\/a> fields are presumably the fields associated with ultimatons, as discussed in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Urantia\">Urantia book<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I was quite disappointed in <em>radioaesthetics<\/em>, which I briefly hoped would turn out to involve some sort of modern form of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/artopia\/2009\/01\/david_burliuk_the_ukrainian_fa.html\">David Burliuk<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radioltranzista.net\/?page_id=20\">Radio-Futurism<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/burliuk1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Click to embiggen\" src=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/burliuk1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Burliuk and his wife were among the Russian emigr\u00e9s who were close friends of my grandparents, and thereby became honorary aunts and uncles of mine. (Until I was twelve or so, I thought I had dozens of real aunts and uncles, members of a family whose size and diversity should have tipped me off&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>Anyhow, I guess that <em>aesthetics<\/em> in <em>radioaesthetics<\/em> has the (otherwise obsolete) meaning &#8220;Of or pertaining to sensuous perception, received by the senses&#8221;, rather than the derived but now-usual &#8220;Of or pertaining to the appreciation or criticism of the beautiful&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Both <em>radioaesthetics<\/em> and <em>ultimatonic<\/em> are currently missing from the OED.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ben Goldacre recently featured this lovely job advertisement: A couple of the words were new to me: radioaesthetics turns out to mean &#8220;dowsing&#8221;, basically; and ultimatonic fields are presumably the fields associated with ultimatons, as discussed in the Urantia book.
