{"id":357823,"date":"2010-02-24T11:02:57","date_gmt":"2010-02-24T16:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/?p=77528"},"modified":"2010-02-24T11:02:57","modified_gmt":"2010-02-24T16:02:57","slug":"senate-passes-jobs-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/357823","title":{"rendered":"Senate Passes Jobs Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two days after it overcame its <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/77382\/five-republicans-break-ranks-as-jobs-bill-passes-cloture-vote\">chief procedural hurdle<\/a>, a scaled-back jobs bill just passed the Senate by a vote of 70-28.<\/p>\n<p>The $15 billion bill must now be reconciled with a $154 billion jobs bill passed by the House in December.<span id=\"more-77528\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/02\/24\/AR2010022402258.html?hpid=topnews\">The Washington Post<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The measure passed 70 to 28, with 13 Republicans joining 57 Democrats in  support of the package. One Democrat, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whorunsgov.com\/Profiles\/Ben_Nelson\">Sen. Ben  Nelson<\/a> of Nebraska, voted against it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had so much <a href=\"http:\/\/projects.washingtonpost.com\/politicsglossary\/Congressional\/gridlock\/\">gridlock<\/a>,&#8221; said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whorunsgov.com\/Profiles\/Charles_E._Schumer\">Sen.  Charles E. Schumer<\/a> (D-N.Y.), co-author of a key portion of the  bill. Now, he said, &#8220;finally we have something&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/projects.washingtonpost.com\/politicsglossary\/legislative\/bipartisanship\/\">bipartisan<\/a> to show the public.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation is the first element of what <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whorunsgov.com\/Profiles\/Harry_M._Reid\">Senate  Majority Leader Harry M. Reid<\/a> (D-Nev.) has said will be a multipart  &#8220;jobs agenda.&#8221; The measure includes a new program that would give  companies a break from paying Social Security taxes on new employees for  the remainder of 2010.
