Click to learn more about this neighborhood.\"><\/img><\/a> About three dozen <a href=\"http:\/\/projects.latimes.com\/mapping-la\/neighborhoods\/neighborhood\/silver-lake\/\">Silver Lake<\/a> residents and business owners met with police Tuesday night for what organizers touted as a town hall meeting \u201cto discuss the escalating gunfire, violent crime, burglary and physical violence in our neighborhood.\u201d<br \/><\/br>\u00a0<br \/><\/br>The gathering was prompted by a string of recent incidents in the Sunset Junction neighborhood, said business owner Jeff Castelaz, including an armed robbery\u00a0at a 7-Eleven convenience store,\u00a0an attempted robbery <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/lanow\/2010\/02\/police-investigate-silver-lake-homicide.html\" >that left\u00a0a man dead on Manzanita Street<\/a> and a shooting Monday afternoon outside of Castelaz&#8217;s\u00a0 record label, Dangerbird Records.<br \/><\/br>\u00a0<br \/><\/br>No one was injured in Monday&#8217;s shooting, which police believe was gang-related. But Castelaz said bullets struck his building and an employee\u2019s car and almost\u00a0hit a\u00a0member\u00a0of\u00a0one of the\u00a0bands signed to his label.\u00a0<br \/><\/br>\u00a0<br \/><\/br>&quot;We\u2019ll do the best we can to piece this together,\u201d said LAPD Capt. William Murphy, commanding officer of the Northeast Division, which claims much of Silver Lake as its territory. <\/p>\n<p>Murphy\u00a0said crime is down in the area this year with the exception of rape and burglary. There have been 35 burglaries so far in 2010, which is 48% higher than last year, he said. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Local business owners pleaded with police to do more to combat crime. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do think that crime is going up in the area,\u201d said Irma Gonzalez, the owner of Tacos Delta.<\/p>\n<p>She complained that police were unresponsive after a recent attempted break-in at her taco stand.\u00a0 The fact that Silver Lake is patrolled by two LAPD divisions,\u00a0Northeast and Rampart, contributes to the problem, residents and business owners said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn our end it\u2019s confusing and frustrating to be in the middle of these borderlands,\u201d said resident Thaddeus Herrick, who has lived in the area for 10 years. &quot;I&#8217;ve always felt safe.
