{"id":359287,"date":"2010-02-24T06:35:05","date_gmt":"2010-02-24T11:35:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/opiniojuris.org\/?p=11442"},"modified":"2010-02-24T06:35:05","modified_gmt":"2010-02-24T11:35:05","slug":"inching-toward-peace-in-sudan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/359287","title":{"rendered":"Inching Toward Peace in Sudan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>by Julian Ku <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite all the grumbling from NGOs, there <a  href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/africa\/8533097.stm\">does appear to be some modest progress<\/a> toward more peace and stability in Sudan.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"first\">Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has signed a framework ceasefire deal with one of Darfur&#8217;s main rebel groups, the Justice and Equality Movement (Jem).<\/p>\n<p>The power-sharing agreement in Qatar is seen as an important step towards peace, though the other main rebel group has refused to enter talks.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is hardly peace in our time, but it is better than what we had before. \u00a0And let&#8217;s remember, as awful as Bashir, it is &#8220;war criminal&#8221; Omar al-Bashir who made this deal, and who will probably be re-elected later this year. \u00a0I suppose it would have no effect on this fragile peace deal if he was arrested now.
