{"id":362289,"date":"2010-02-25T10:16:10","date_gmt":"2010-02-25T15:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.earthportal.org\/news\/?p=3150"},"modified":"2010-02-25T10:16:10","modified_gmt":"2010-02-25T15:16:10","slug":"delaware-river-dredging-gets-ok","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/362289","title":{"rendered":"Delaware River dredging gets OK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/inquirer\/business\/20100224_Army_Corps_OKs_start_of_Delaware_dredging.html\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media.philly.com\/images\/300*170\/20100224_inq_dredge24-a.JPG\" width=\"232\" align=\"left\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/eenews.net\/Greenwire\/2010\/02\/24\/14\/\" >GreenWire<\/a>: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will allow a dredging contractor to deepen the Delaware River shipping channel by 5 feet.<\/p>\n<p>Norfolk Dredging Co. of Chesapeake, Va., received a $24 million contract option to deepen the channel, which is currently set at 40 feet deep.<\/p>\n<p>The contract will not start before Friday, the date the government told an appeals court it would begin. The corps will also wait until the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority purchases &#8220;emission reduction credits&#8221; to meet the requirements of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eoearth.org\/article\/Clean_Air_Act%2C_United_States\">U.S. Clean Air Act<\/a>. The Army Corps expects that action to be finished this week.<\/p>\n<p>Environmental groups opposing the project are asking the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to block a federal judge&#8217;s order that allowed the deepening to begin in a section of the river off Delaware. They worry that the work will stir up toxic sediment and damage water quality.
