{"id":362573,"date":"2010-02-25T14:19:46","date_gmt":"2010-02-25T19:19:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dirt.asla.org\/?p=3952"},"modified":"2010-02-25T14:19:46","modified_gmt":"2010-02-25T19:19:46","slug":"attacking-invasive-plants-from-the-air","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/362573","title":{"rendered":"Attacking Invasive Plants from the Air"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/aslathedirt.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/hawaiiinvasives.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3953\" title=\"hawaiiinvasives\" src=\"http:\/\/aslathedirt.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/hawaiiinvasives.jpg?w=300&#038;h=379\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"379\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWired&#8217;s Planet Earth<\/em> reports that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.org\/wherewework\/northamerica\/states\/hawaii\/\" >Nature Conservancy&#8217;s Hawaii program<\/a> has undertaken an ambitious\u00a0conservation\u00a0program in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kauaiwatershed.org\/\" >Kauai watershed<\/a>, a 144,000-acre &#8220;cloud forest&#8221; that varies in elevation by 3,000 feet.\u00a0According to <em>Wired<\/em>, the area has been invaded by Australian tree ferns, an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Invasive_species\" >invasive species<\/a> characterized as &#8220;water-sucking&#8221; and &#8220;plant-strangling.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Given the difficulty of accessing the area&#8217;s varied and dense terrain on foot, the Nature Conservancy team decided to go by plane. The Nature Conservancy first\u00a0flies a\u00a0Cessna 186 fitted with digital cameras and &#8220;a multispectral imager&#8221; that creates precise images of areas of infestation. Australian tree ferns have a distinctive shape\u00a0so individual plants can be marked\u00a0for herbicide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Once plants are marked, a helicopter is set up with a &#8220;winch system&#8221;\u00a0with a hose used to spray\u00a0tree ferns.\u00a0The Nature Conservancy team also tested the use of &#8220;high-pressure paintball guns&#8221; that can shoot herbicide pellets. This system was\u00a0developed\u00a0for by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/peps\/people\/fac\/profile_leary.htm\" >University of Hawaii weed ecologist James Leary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/magazine\/2010\/01\/st_weedwhacker\/\" >Read the article<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For more\u00a0on fighting invasive plant species in the U.S., go to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.invasivespeciesinfo.gov\/plants\/main.shtml\" >U.S. Department of Agriculture&#8217;s National Agriculture Library<\/a>, which\u00a0offers a comprehensive set of resources on invasive plants.
