His death came after he had initiated an 80-day hunger strike aimed at improving his conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Raul Castro &lt;ahref=&quot;http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nation-and-world\/la-fg-cuba25-2010feb25,0,1560294.story&quot;&gt;made a rare motion of \u0093lamenting\u0094 over the death of Zapata. In a depressingly predictable move, however, Castro managed to somehow lay the death of Zapata at the feet of the United States, inferring that tortures and executions only occur in Cuba at the Guantanamo Bay military base, which is of course controlled by the U.S.&lt;spanid=&quot;more-27429&quot;&gt;&lt;\/span&gt;<\/p>\n<p>Zapata\u0092s mother, Raina Luisa Tamayo Dangier, has not minced words in her response to her son\u0092s death, stating in a testimony, \u0093I think my son&#8217;s death was a premeditated murder. My son was tortured throughout his incarceration.\u0094 She also compared her son\u0092s death to the death of &lt;ahref=&quot;http:\/\/www.cadal.org\/english\/nota.asp?id_nota=1007&quot;&gt;Pedro Boitel, a Cuban poet opposed to the Castro regime who died during a hunger strike in 1972, before calling on \u0093the world to demand the freedom of the other prisoners and brothers unfairly.\u0094<br \/>\n Spanish Prime Minister Jose Zapatero was &lt;ahref=&quot;http:\/\/www.etaiwannews.com\/etn\/news_content.php?id=1189233&amp;lang=eng_news&quot;&gt;surpris  ingly forthcoming on the issue.
