Yesterday’s health summit produced seven hours of televised history but little evidence of movement toward a health-care overhaul. No surprise there, but the dividing lines between Democrats and Republicans are clearer now and there could be a silver lining in that.<\/p>\n
The big gulfs come down to three basic philosophical disagreements, the WSJ’s Capital Journal column<\/a> says this morning:<\/p>\n \u0095 Is the goal comprehensive or incremental change?<\/strong> Dems want a big ball of wax that expands coverage, curbs costs and revamps insurance regs. Republicans want to go “step by step.”<\/p>\n \u0095 Is access or cost the top priority?<\/strong> Control costs and you make it easier for people to buy and keep coverage, the GOP says. The Democrats say expanding access will drive down costs.<\/p>\n \u0095 Should government or markets set the standards?<\/strong> Easy to guess how they come out on this.
