Carly Simon has given the biggest clue yet into one of music’s great mysteries. Who inspired her hit 1972 song “You’re So Vain?” The identity of the singer’s former lover is revealed in a new acoustic version of the song, recorded for the 64-year-old’s greatest hits album.<\/p>\n
<\/span><\/p>\n “I’m just going to tell you this,” <\/em>Carly said, speaking to Uncut Magazine<\/em> this week. “The answer is on the new version of You’re So Vain. There’s a little whisper – and it’s the answer to the puzzle.”<\/p>\n The Sun<\/em> claims the music legend is heard whispering “David” in an instrumental interlude as a reference to the long unidentified man. In fact, the London tabloid goes one step further and claims that Simon was talking about record exec David Geffen — who was head of Carly’s Elektra record label.
