{"id":367156,"date":"2010-02-26T09:37:14","date_gmt":"2010-02-26T14:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.earthportal.org\/news\/?p=3155"},"modified":"2010-02-26T09:37:14","modified_gmt":"2010-02-26T14:37:14","slug":"u-k-agency-calls-for-greater-flood-protection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/367156","title":{"rendered":"U.K. agency calls for greater flood protection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/uk_news\/8535749.stm\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/newsimg.bbc.co.uk\/media\/images\/47369000\/jpg\/_47369121_008697973-1.jpg\" width=\"209\" align=\"right\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/eenews.net\/climatewire\/2010\/02\/26\/7\/\" >ClimateWire<\/a>: The head of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eoearth.org\/article\/Energy_profile_of_the_United_Kingdom\">United Kingdom&#8217;s<\/a> Environment Agency yesterday called for businesses to develop more innovative products to safeguard homes and properties against flood risk.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eoearth.org\/article\/Climate_Change_%28collection%29\">Climate change<\/a> is likely to increase the frequency and severity of flooding, and the U.K. could be the global market leader on technologies to counter the impacts that it brings,&#8221; Lord Chris Smith told members of the National Flood Forum, an organization of people who live in more than 200 areas affected by flooding.<\/p>\n<p>One in six properties in England and Wales is already at risk from floods, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Simple measures such as fitting water-resistant skirting boards and installing plug sockets farther up the wall would help property owners protect their homes from damage, he said.
