Arnold Schwarzenegger the model in California?<\/p>\n<p>The state&#8217;s information guru seems to think so, <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/california-politics\/2010\/02\/state-takes-aim-at-risks-of-twitter-bans-facebook-friends.html\">according to<\/a> The Times&#8217; Michael Rothfeld. Writing on <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/california-politics\/2010\/02\/state-takes-aim-at-risks-of-twitter-bans-facebook-friends.html\">PolitiCal,<\/a> The Times&#8217; California politics blog, Rothfeld <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/california-politics\/2010\/02\/state-takes-aim-at-risks-of-twitter-bans-facebook-friends.html\">says the<\/a> state&#8217;s new\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cio.ca.gov\/Government\/IT_Policy\/pdf\/SIMM_66B.pdf\">&quot;Social Media Standard&quot;<\/a>\u00a0 is designed to make sure employees don&#8217;t run amok.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;As with most technologies, there is a measure of risk that must be addressed and mitigated,&quot; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cio.ca.gov\/Government\/IT_Policy\/pdf\/ITPL_10-02_Social_Media.pdf\">the state&#8217;s chief Information officer, Teri Takai, wrote.<\/a> Those risks are significant, according to Statewide Information Management Manual Section 66B: tweeting and facebooking can hamper employee productivity, strain Internet connections, cause &quot;reputational risk to personnel, the agency, and the State,&quot; result in the leak of sensitive materials, introduce viruses into the &quot;IT environment,&quot; and more. <\/p>\n<p>As a shining example of how to do it right,\u00a0Takai pointed to <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/schwarzenegger\">Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger<\/a>, who she said had &quot;used these communications channels with great success.&quot; Among the governor&#8217;s dynamic use of social media: a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-kbmxfj1NP8\">video mocking state lawmakers for debating about cow tails<\/a>, a picture of a <a href=\"http:\/\/twitpic.com\/kujml\">smiley face he made in his oatmeal with fruit<\/a>, a photo of <a href=\"http:\/\/twitpic.com\/150z22\">his Popeye-like biceps<\/a>, and a video in which he <a href=\"http:\/\/vidly.com\/abv1?twitvid\">brandished a big knife<\/a> while proposing to cut the state budget. <\/p>\n<p>The new standard doesn&#8217;t seem to leave room for such creativity by most state workers, who must follow an &quot;acceptable use policy&quot; and only use social media sites &quot;to fulfill the business requirements.&quot; Only authorized users can participate, and some sites should be disabled to prevent &quot;unnecessary functionality&quot; such as instant messaging. <\/p>\n<p>Read more about the new social media rules <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/california-politics\/2010\/02\/state-takes-aim-at-risks-of-twitter-bans-facebook-friends.html\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tell us what you think about it?
