In fact, this is what allowed Firefox and Chrome to zoom ahead of other browsers in terms of rendering speed. However, now that other browsers have also implemented similar features, Firefox has once again fallen behind.

Obviously, Mozilla isn’t pleased with the current situation. In most speed tests, current builds of Firefox end up getting trashed by every browser other than Internet Explorer. This has prompted Mozilla to begin work on a new engine called JaegerMonkey.

TraceMonkey</a> is a fantastic product and is definitely quite fast. However, the problem is that tracing doesn't always work. In those situations, Firefox has to fall back on its old-school JavaScript rendering engine - SpiderMonkey. SpiderMonkey churns out purely interpreted code and is vastly slower than TraceMonkey. JaegerMonkey will add a new “baseline” method JIT compiler for SpiderMonkey and bridge the speed difference between TraceMonkey and SpiderMonkey.

Work on JaegerMonkey is just getting started and it will possibly take several months for this to appear even in the alpha builds of Firefox. Nevertheless, this gives Firefox users something to look forward to.

Share:
Comment on This Post |
Tweet This |
Save to Delicious |
Stumble This |
Digg This |
Reddit This

TAGS: Firefox, Internet Browsers

Mozilla JaegerMonkey – Bringing Speed Back To Firefox originally appeared on Techie Buzz written by Pallab De on Saturday 27th February 2010 12:15:55 AM.
