font-size: 15px;\">We&#8217;re Making Our Own Sprouts Now!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Thanks to a wonderful reader, Kim, who wrote after I posted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.happyhealthylonglife.com\/happy_healthy_long_life\/2009\/12\/super-foods.html\">&#8220;Straight from the Experts at Ohio State<br \/>\nUniversity, Johns Hopkins University, &amp; Canyon Ranch: Three<br \/>\n&#8220;New-to-Me&#8221; Super Foods: Black Raspberries, Broccoli Sprouts, &amp;<br \/>\nChicory-Family Leafy Greens&#8221;, <\/a>we have started making our own sprouts at home.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">\u00a0&#8220;Why buy Brocco-Sprouts for $4.99 a container when you can make them yourself?\u00a0 It&#8217;s much cheaper to do your own &amp; it&#8217;s really easy.\u00a0 Check out <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sproutpeople.com\/index.html\">Sprout People!<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">, &#8220;<\/span> Kim said.<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"> My husband took off running with Kim&#8217;s suggestion.\u00a0 Soon we had 10 white plastic sprouters on top of our kitchen counter, and all kinds of seeds to sprout.\u00a0 He is now a huge fan of the <strong>Sprout People<\/strong>.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Sprouting is like having an indoor mini-fresh-garden in the winter.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">He&#8217;s now <strong>THE <\/strong>sprout-maven-indoor-farmer, and I just sit back and enjoy the harvest.\u00a0 Broccoli and alfalfa sprouts are our favorites&#8211;and you can&#8217;t compare the cost &amp; freshness of sprouting your own to buying them at <strong>Whole Foods.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">He has broccoli sprouts ready to eat in 3-6 days and they last from 2-6 weeks in the refrigerator&#8211;although we eat up a batch in a week&#8211;adding them to sandwiches and salads.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">He&#8217;s experimented with all kinds of seeds, including sprouting up a batch of <strong>&#8220;Madison Market Mix<\/strong>&#8221; which is a combo of peanuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and almonds.\u00a0 The <strong>Sprout Peopl<\/strong>e say this is &#8220;more of a soak than a sprout&#8221;, but it&#8217;s delicious on a salad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><strong>Wondering what the big deal is with sprouts?<\/strong><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; color: #8b8b8b;\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #8b8b8b;\">&#8220;Sprouts are one of the most complete and nutritional foods on the planet.\u00a0 They&#8217;re rich with enzymes and vitamins and amino acids.\u00a0 And perhaps most important of all, sprouts like alfalfa, broccoli, clover, mung bean, and the like contain concentrated amounts of phytochemicals that can have strong protective effects against disease. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #8b8b8b;\">When you eat a sprout, you&#8217;re actually eating a very, very young version of the whole plant.\u00a0 You&#8217;re eating the root, stem, and head.\u00a0 <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #8b8b8b;\">Different glucosinolates&#8211;phytochemicals that convert to very healthy metabolites in the body&#8211;are concentrated in different parts of the plant.\u00a0 Some are still in the root, others are in the leaves that are thrown away, still others are in the stem.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #8b8b8b;\">According to Sonja Pettersen, N.D., &#8220;Sprouts are one of the most concentrated sources of nutrition.\u00a0 They&#8217;re loaded with phytonutrients.&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">-Jonny Bowden, PhD, C.N.S., author of <strong>The 150 Healthiest Foods of Earth-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #bf5f00;\"><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #bf5f00; <\/strong>recommend, I rolled my eyes, and thought, &#8220;Uh oh!\u00a0 Now he&#8217;s listening to some weird <strong>&#8220;Sprout People&#8221;<\/strong> on an internet site.\u00a0 What next?&#8221;\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I had tried those <strong>Debbie Meyer Green Bags <\/strong>(thanks to SIL Lis) and was disappointed.\u00a0 These sounded like more of the same.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>But according to &#8220;The Sprout People&#8221;:<\/strong>\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #8b8b8b;\">These<br \/>\nbags are amazing! We have tested sprouts, fruits and veggies. We had<br \/>\nCilantro in one of these bags for a month! Plastic bags will still do<br \/>\nfor storing your sprouts, but if you want the best &#8211; for every sprout,<br \/>\nfruit and vegetable &#8211; try these! <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #8b8b8b;\">You know us, we don&#8217;t sell stuff just<br \/>\nto sell it &#8211; these really are awesome. The bags are widely reviewed<br \/>\n(positively), and like we said above &#8211; our personal experience is<br \/>\ngreat, so we think it is a good bet you&#8217;ll be happy with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #8b8b8b;\">Read more about these bags ($5.85 for 10 re-usable bags) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sproutpeople.com\/grow\/refrigerate.html\">here.<br \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">These bags really are superior to just storing produce in regular plastic bags!\u00a0\u00a0 Really.\u00a0\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t expect them to perform at all.\u00a0 I stored a cut ripe avocado in a bag&#8211;following the directions to press out the air in the bag &amp; seal with a twist tie.\u00a0 It stayed green and fresh for 10 days&#8211;and I had fresh avocado to spread on my sandwiches.\u00a0 Far superior to a regular bag or container.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Then I decided to try cilantro, which always ends up rotting in the bag after I use it once for a recipe.\u00a0 Not this time!\u00a0 The same for the lacinato kale.\u00a0 They are as fresh as the first day I bought them, after 10 days.\u00a0 I wish I could report that they lasted longer&#8211;but I used them up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>My light bulb discovery!<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I followed the <strong>PEAK<em>fresh<\/em><\/strong> directions.\u00a0 Pre-cool warm fruit and vegetables in refrigerator before storing in bag. <strong>Check!<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Use a separate bag for each type of produce. <strong>Check!<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Produce should be fresh, <strong>dry, <\/strong>and undamaged.\u00a0 <strong>Easier said than done.\u00a0 But a key step!<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>DRY<\/strong>!\u00a0 Wetness is what rots produce quicker than you can blink an eye.\u00a0 And with all those grocery store sprinklers drenching the greens &amp; herbs getting them dry is tough.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve tried blotting them with towels &#8211; but when I wanted to test out the<strong> PEAK<em>fresh<\/em><\/strong> bags the &#8220;towel dry&#8221; method was not doing the job.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>I thought about laying the greens out to dry on the kitchen counter, but I didn&#8217;t want to take the time to do it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Then it dawned on me!\u00a0 Use a hair dryer.\u00a0 <\/strong>I laid out the greens, zapped them with the hair dryer, and in 2 minutes they were dry enough to get bagged.\u00a0 Yes, it&#8217;s an extra step, but produce is expensive.\u00a0 It beats having to throw out rotted veggies.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t laugh.\u00a0 It worked.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #bf5f00; font-size: 15px;\">My Step Counter Experience<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #8b8b8b;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is my new toy.\u00a0 Last week I mentioned that as part of my workplace&#8217;s incentive to lower our health insurance rates I have to report how many hours I exercise a week and how many cups of vegetables &amp; fruit I eat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I could have opted to report how many steps I walked a day if I had wanted.\u00a0 Everyone received a free <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Omron-HJ-150-Hip-Pedometer\/dp\/B000MNAXRA?ie=UTF8&amp;s=hpc\">Omron Hip Pedometer<\/a> and after writing the post about Dr. Sharon Alger-Mayer&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.happyhealthylonglife.com\/happy_healthy_long_life\/2010\/02\/diet-and-exercise.html\">tips on keeping weight off<\/a>&#8211;people who successfully kept their weight off put in 11,000 steps a day (5.5 miles)&#8211;I decided to clip that pedometer to my hip &amp; see how much walking I was doing throughout the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">OK&#8211;I admit it.\u00a0 Exercise is not a problem for me.\u00a0 I can easily exercise 6-7 hours a week, because I just like to exercise.\u00a0 But, honestly, my weight just stays the same&#8211;it doesn&#8217;t budge.\u00a0 Maybe the pedometer will help me knock off a few pounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here&#8217;s what I&#8217;m finding out:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wearing a step-counter is fun and motivating.\u00a0 Who would have thought?<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Throughout a regular workday&#8211;I don&#8217;t use the counter while I exercise&#8211;I manage around 6,000-6,500 steps a day&#8211;between 2.84-3.00 miles just doing my regular routine.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a far cry from 11,000 steps a day.\u00a0 I guess I need to kick it up a notch.<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My basic plain-Jane <strong>Omron<\/strong> step-counter\/pedometer is as easy-as-pie to use.\u00a0 This is the pedometer my very large medical center has chosen to use,\u00a0 probably because it&#8217;s easy, reliable, long-lasting, and<strong> low cost<\/strong>. There are more sophisticated pedometers out there, but this one is a no-brainer-which is a good thing.\u00a0 Just clip it on in the morning and go.\u00a0 It records a week&#8217;s worth of steps.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The urge to do more.<\/strong> It&#8217;s human nature to want to challenge yourself, and increase your steps.\u00a0 I find I want excuses to get up and walk around at work.\u00a0 Normally, I never take breaks, but next week I&#8217;m going to start&#8211;and see how many extra miles I can add up with speed walking for 15 minutes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My friend Mary Pat told me that she takes every extra opportunity she can to pump up her daily step totals.\u00a0 Instead of sitting down for 30 minutes while she waited for a doctor&#8217;s appointment, she just walked back &amp; forth&#8211;boosting her steps.\u00a0 When she arrived at a movie theater an hour early&#8211;to be sure to get a ticket&#8211;she didn&#8217;t go into the theater and sit down&#8211;she just walked around the theater.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Want to check out the best pedometers?\u00a0 Click<a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinrothonline.com\/personalhealthmonitor\/Reviews\/omron_pedometers.htm\"> here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinrothonline.com\/personalhealthmonitor\/pedometers.htm\">here<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #bf5f00; font-size: 15px;\">Switching Up My Exercise Routine &amp; Changing My Work Schedule<br \/><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since November I&#8217;ve tweaked my usual work &amp; exercise schedule to maximize my time and energy.\u00a0 Hey, a\u00a0 little experimenting is always a good idea!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>I am a true-believer in my post:<span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.happyhealthylonglife.com\/happy_healthy_long_life\/2008\/05\/maximize-your-e.html\">Maximize Your Energy-Match Your Tasks To Your Daily Energy Levels<\/a>, and\u00a0 it was high time to stop wasting my peak <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #003399;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;9-11 am:<\/span> <\/span><span>Brain work-Creativity-Analytical work&#8221; <\/span><\/strong><span>time slot on housework, errands, or exercise on the days <em>when I&#8217;m not at work<\/em>.\u00a0 It really helps to pay attention to what your best times for brain work are, and make the most of those hours.\u00a0 I definitely lose motivation for &#8220;hard thinking work&#8221; if I don&#8217;t do it early.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>By carefully rejiggering my schedule, I was also able to get to a yoga class 3 times\u00a0 week, instead of maybe once every other week.\u00a0\u00a0 And instead of doing my same-old same-old Nautilus weight-machine work-out, I added a killer old-fashioned weight-training class to kick things up a notch.\u00a0 And I still get to a Spinning class 3 times a week.\u00a0 <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Why was I skipping out on yoga?\u00a0<\/strong> I always planned to go to a yoga class after work&#8211;never happened.\u00a0 And the less I went, the harder it was.\u00a0 And the harder it was, the less I wanted to go.\u00a0 Guess what?\u00a0 Once I started going 3 times a week those planks &amp; <\/span>Chatarangas (the yoga push-up) started getting easier, and I started to really reap the benefits of a regular yoga practice. <\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Here&#8217;s what I did:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>On non-work days, I write or research in the morning when I&#8217;m fresh&#8211;the best time for brain work. Errands, housework, and everything else come later in the day.\u00a0 If I do decide to exercise I do it in the late afternoon, instead of exercising first thing in the morning.\u00a0 <br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>I volunteered to work late every Thursday night, but I leave the house at 9:00 am.\u00a0 I go straight to the gym and take a tough old-fashioned weight-training class, and follow it up with a yoga class.\u00a0 Then I head on to work.\u00a0 Before this switch I never exercised on Thursday.\u00a0 <br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Early Monday morning I head to a yoga class before starting work.\u00a0 No need for a shower after class&#8211;I save time by changing into work clothes once I get to work.\u00a0 <br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Switching from weight machines to a weight-training class has upped my strength.\u00a0 It&#8217;s so easy to stick to the same-old-same-old routine because it&#8217;s comfortable and a no-brainer.\u00a0 But, Ann Esselstyn (Who is she?<a href=\"http:\/\/www.happyhealthylonglife.com\/happy_healthy_long_life\/2009\/02\/lunch-at-the-esselstyns.html\"> Click here<\/a>.) convinced me to try this class, and what a challenge it is!\u00a0 She&#8217;s over 12 years older than I am, and if she can do it&#8211;I can do it!\u00a0 There is no way I would do push-ups, squats, lunges, planks, and free-weights on my own.\u00a0 No way.\u00a0 This is like having a knowledgeable personal trainer without the cost.\u00a0 It&#8217;s definitely a killer, but every week it just gets easier and easier.\u00a0 Thank goodness.\u00a0 <strong>Added benefit:<\/strong>\u00a0 This class keeps my heart rate in an aerobic range for most of the hour!\u00a0 A 2-fer!\u00a0 I never even budged into the aerobic range with the Nautilus machines.<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><strong>Take away point:\u00a0<\/strong> Look at your schedule.\u00a0 Are you doing your brain work when you are at your sharpest, or are you wasting your best hours on activities that don&#8217;t need brain power?\u00a0\u00a0 And look carefully at your schedule, and see where you can squeeze in some exercise.\u00a0 I&#8217;d rather stay at work later, and get my exercise in early.\u00a0 By evening time I&#8217;m just ready to chill out.\u00a0 <br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I know you all have wonderful discoveries that are making your life easier, healthier, and more productive.\u00a0 I get some of my best ideas from all of you.\u00a0 So, please, let me know what&#8217;s new and working for you!\u00a0 What&#8217;s working?\u00a0 What&#8217;s not?<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"feedflare\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~ff\/typepad\/happyhealthylonglife\/happy_healthy_long_life?a=3Fhgr1zplzE:pNnXnHgmYVI:yIl2AUoC8zA\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~ff\/typepad\/happyhealthylonglife\/happy_healthy_long_life?d=yIl2AUoC8zA\" border=\"0\"><\/img><\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~r\/typepad\/happyhealthylonglife\/happy_healthy_long_life\/~4\/3Fhgr1zplzE\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Easy Sprout &#8211; The Sprout People&#8217;s Most Popular Sprouter If you&#8217;ve received this post via email, click here to get to the web version and all the links.
