This press release hit the GER email<\/a> this morning from the American Petroleum Institute (API), the powerful lobby group representing the interest of the oil and gas industry in Washington.<\/p>\n It announces that Deryck Spooner, the head of the Nature Conservancy\u2019s climate change outreach is jumping ship to the API to build the institute’s grass roots strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n That’s quite a coup for the API. In Spooner, the API gets one of the green community’s “top grass-roots organizer,” reports GreenWire<\/a>, which first reported the news on Friday.<\/p>\n The move probably raised some eyebrows (it raised ours) but is actually not that surprising.<\/p>\n Indeed, while the API is an obvious backer of carbon-loaded energy, some of its key members (BP<\/a>, Royal Dutch Shell<\/a>) are on the record supporting cap-and-trade and have accepted human-made climate change.<\/p>\n However, expect Spooner to use his organizing skills to defend the API\u2019s green and not so green agenda.<\/p>\n API spokeswoman Cathy Landry tells GreenWire:<\/p>\n Jack’s vision is to mobilize the 9.2 million people whose jobs rely on the oil and gas industry.
