\"\"<\/a>I have a GPS unit to keep me from getting lost while I\u2019m driving, but it doesn\u2019t hook up to my computer. If I wanted to use geolocation applications to show online friends where I was at the moment, I couldn\u2019t do it.\u00a0 Until now \u2026.<\/p>\n

Sathya Bhat<\/a> sent me an email yesterday telling me about a new geo-location solution. Two crazy programmers named Long Zeng<\/a> and Rafael Rivera<\/a> have created a program that identifies where you are by using either your IP address, or Wifi triangulation. The application is called \u201cGeosense for Windows<\/em>\u201d, but, it only works in Windows 7. Apparently Windows 7 has a built in location sensing API that nobody else is taking advantage of yet.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how to set it up:<\/strong><\/p>\n

First, go to the home page and download Geosense<\/a> <\/em> and install it.<\/p>\n

To enable Geosense<\/em>, go to your Start Menu<\/em> and type \u201clocation\u201d (without quotes) into the search box. Then click on \u201cEnable location and other sensors<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

Next place a check-mark in the check-box to enable Geosense.<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve clicked \u201cApply\u201d, you won\u2019t notice anything new. However, you\u2019ll find that any location aware application you run, will now automatically know where you are.<\/p>\n

The Geosense<\/em> website offers a nice Google Maps test application<\/a> to try out. You can also run the Windows Weather Gadget to find your local weather. Here you can see both of these running on my laptop.<\/p>\n

They also mention that there\u2019s a Twitter application called MahTweets<\/a> which can grab the location and put it into your tweets.<\/p>\n

Techie Buzz Verdict:<\/h3>\n

Geosense is not going to be able to replace my car\u2019s GPS unit, but if I\u2019m on the road, at least I\u2019ll know about where I am, even when I\u2019m away from the car. I did notice that it was only able to give an approximate location, within half a kilometer, so it\u2019s not perfect. It\u2019s a free app that makes excellent use of a previously hidden feature in Windows 7. I love it.<\/em><\/p>\n
