{"id":379953,"date":"2010-03-02T12:00:28","date_gmt":"2010-03-02T17:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/?p=102735"},"modified":"2010-03-02T12:00:28","modified_gmt":"2010-03-02T17:00:28","slug":"u-s-carriers-are-running-out-of-growth-options","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/379953","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Carriers Are Running Out of Growth Options"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s hard to grow in a saturated market, but despite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctia.org\/media\/industry_info\/index.cfm\/AID\/10323\">89 percent cell phone penetration<\/a> in the U.S., AT&amp;T managed to pull out some impressive revenue growth over the past three years, not because it has the iPhone but because it&#8217;s been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.colbertnation.com\/the-colbert-report-videos\/182555\/january-15-2007\/bears---balls---gas\">buying other companies<\/a>. We&#8217;ve written about AT&amp;T&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2009\/01\/28\/att-beholden-to-steve-iphone\/\">dependence on the iPhone<\/a>, but this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegeography.com\/cu\/article.php?article_id=32307&amp;email=html\">chart from TeleGeography <\/a>illustrating AT&amp;T&#8217;s sales growth over the period &#8212; on par with service providers in countries where cell phone subscribers are still growing &#8212; is tied primarily to Ma Bell&#8217;s acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/growth.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  title=\"growth\" src=\"http:\/\/gigaom.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/growth.jpg?w=489&#038;h=462\" alt=\"\" width=\"489\" height=\"462\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-102733\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The companies found in the lower part of the chart, which operate in saturated Western Europe markets, are a glimpse of the future for AT&amp;T and even Verizon as U.S. companies run out of acquisition targets. The carriers hope that <a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2009\/07\/22\/att-may-love-m2m-but-show-me-the-data-plans\/\">machine-to-machine communications<\/a> will save them, but they&#8217;re still searching <a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2009\/07\/22\/att-may-love-m2m-but-show-me-the-data-plans\/\">for the right business model<\/a> as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/news.vzw.com\/news\/2010\/03\/pr2010-03-01c.htm\">compelling applications<\/a>.
