Jim Bunning&#8217;s (R-Ky.) <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/77777\/bunning-halts-unemployment-extension-again\" >one-man stand<\/a> against a temporary filing extension: <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/77965\/dems-latest-unemployment-extension-unveiled\" >the Senate&#8217;s long-term extension to file for UI benefits<\/a>, expected to pass the upper chamber this week or next, would provide additional funding &#8212; including an extra $25 per week &#8212; retroactively beginning March 1, regardless of when the bill should become law. (The National Employment Law Project <a href=\"http:\/\/\" >estimates today<\/a> that the provision would benefit 200,000 workers set to exhaust their benefits this week alone.)<\/p>\n<p>That marks a break from the UI extension Congress <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/66965\/unemployment-extension-is-law\" >enacted<\/a> in November, which didn&#8217;t provide retroactive benefits at all.<\/p>\n<p><em>Update: To clarify, the Democrats&#8217; proposals <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/77922\/unemployment-extension-does-not-create-additional-benefits\" ><em>would <strong>not<\/strong> create additional tiers of benefits<\/em><\/a><em>, but would only extend the filing deadline for existing benefits, which came and went Feb. 28.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s some good news for the long-term unemployed poised to exhaust their jobless benefits in the midst of Sen.
