Such is the case with&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/health\/2010-03-02-sugarwars02_ST_N.htm\">today&rsquo;s&nbsp;<em>USA Today<\/em>&nbsp;article<\/a> about the clash between sucrose (table sugar) and high fructose corn syrup, a corn-based sweetener.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWe&rsquo;ve explained before how high fructose corn syrup, which is either 55 or 42 percent fructose, shares a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/consumerfreedom.com\/news_detail.cfm\/h\/4115-rebutting-the-myth-of-evil-high-fructose-corn-syrup\">nearly identical composition with table sugar<\/a>, which is <em>50 <\/em>percent fructose. (The remainder in both is glucose.) Even two notorious &ldquo;food cop&rdquo; activists agree with us, reports&nbsp;<em>USA Today<\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/activistcash.com\/biography.cfm\/b\/1284-michael-jacobson\">Michael Jacobson<\/a>, the usually unreasonable head scold at the <a href=\"http:\/\/activistcash.com\/organization_overview.cfm\/o\/13-center-for-science-in-the-public-interest\">Center for Science in the Public Interest<\/a>, says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\n\t\tThe bottom line is there isn&#39;t a shred of evidence that high-fructose corn syrup is nutritionally any different from sugar.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n\tAnd Barry Popkin, a University of North Carolina scientist, confirms that table sugar and high fructose corn syrup have the same number of calories.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThis is an especially sweet turnaround from Popkin. You might remember that Popkin himself was&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerfreedom.com\/news_detail.cfm\/h\/3786-hfcs-hype-debunked-by-hype-creators\">an original pioneer<\/a>&nbsp;of the theory that high fructose corn syrup bore unique responsibility for rising obesity rates. To his credit, he corrected himself after conducting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerfreedom.com\/news_detail.cfm\/h\/3786-hfcs-hype-debunked-by-hype-creators\">further research<\/a>,&nbsp;and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerfreedom.com\/news_detail.cfm\/h\/3990-fool-me-once\">acknowledged that his speculation was wrong<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tNo doubt, some will continue to cling to the belief that these two sugars are nutritionally different.
