The Canadian government<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0on the verge of\u00a0approving the introduction of extremely bizarre\u00a0genetically modified pigs\u00a0into the Canadian\u00a0food supply.\u00a0 These new mouse\/pig hybrids have been dubbed \u201cenviropigs\u201d and are being touted as being much better for the environment.\u00a0 This new \u201cbreed\u201d of\u00a0Yorkshire pigs was created by\u00a0scientists in Ontario at the University of Guelph, who spliced in genes from mice<\/a> to decrease the amount of phosphorus produced in the pigs\u2019\u00a0excrement.\u00a0 So soon millions of Canadians will be eating meat from mouse\/pig hybrid creatures and most of them will not even\u00a0realize it.\u00a0 It is expected that approval for this new \u201cbrand\u201d of pigs will be sought in the United States as well.\u00a0 But\u00a0this is hardly the first time that scientists have\u00a0mixed two kinds of animals together\u00a0in an attempt to\u00a0create creatures that will be\u00a0beneficial for humanity.<\/p>\n

The truth is that\u00a0scientists around the world are\u00a0now creating bizarre\u00a0hybrid \u201canimals\u201d on a regular basis.\u00a0\u00a0Over the past couple of decades the field of\u00a0genetic modification has made extraordinary advances, and now researchers and scientists seem very eager to exploit these new technologies.<\/p>\n

So what kind of weird, mysterious creatures have scientists been creating?<\/p>\n

Well, what would you think\u00a0of a cat that glows in the dark?<\/p>\n

They really exist.<\/p>\n

A genetically modified cat named Mr. Green Genes\u00a0was the very first fluorescent cat created\u00a0in the United States<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0Under an ultraviolet light, Mr. Green Genes\u00a0puts off\u00a0a very strange\u00a0bright green glow.<\/p>\n

So perhaps in the future not only can your cat cuddle up to you and keep you warm \u2013 it could also serve as a night light.<\/p>\n

But U.S. researchers were not even the first ones to do this to cats.\u00a0 A team of scientists in\u00a0South Korea\u00a0had previously created a cat that glows red under ultraviolet light.<\/p>\n

Now why in the world would scientists do this kind of a thing?<\/p>\n
