{"id":382968,"date":"2010-03-02T15:59:25","date_gmt":"2010-03-02T20:59:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/economics\/2010\/03\/02\/states-push-their-own-jobs-consumer-protection-plans\/"},"modified":"2010-03-02T15:59:25","modified_gmt":"2010-03-02T20:59:25","slug":"states-push-their-own-jobs-consumer-protection-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/382968","title":{"rendered":"States Push Their Own Jobs, Consumer Protection Plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the House and Senate debate bills that would create jobs as well as a new consumer protection agency within the Federal Reserve, states across the country are pushing their mini-me bills that they hope will accomplish some of the same ends.<\/p>\n<p>On the consumer side, the <strong>Arizona<\/strong> Senate on Monday <a href=\"http:\/\/azdailysun.com\/news\/state-and-regional\/article_64798e89-a245-539c-852e-6bd6301b4986.html\">passed a bill<\/a> that would restrict many of the risky home loans that helped the state become one of the nation\u0092s foreclosure capitals. Among other things, the new bill would bar so-called \u0093negative amortization\u0094 loans and forbids lenders from \u0093approving loans where there is little prospect the borrower&#8217;s income is enough to make future payments,\u0094 according to the Arizona Daily Sun.<strong> Connecticut<\/strong>\u0092s Senate is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhregister.com\/articles\/2010\/03\/02\/news\/a3-caphomeowners.txt\">working on a plan<\/a> that would require banks to have a representative that homeowners facing foreclosure can talk to about their options.<\/p>\n<p>The number of state consumer protection laws pales in comparison to the slew of jobs proposals being debated in statehouses country. The <strong>National Conference of State Legislatures<\/strong> reported that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagobreakingbusiness.com\/2010\/03\/states-may-ban-credit-checks-on-job-applicants.html\">16 states have proposed bills<\/a> to ban credit checks on most job applicants, while <strong>Hawaii<\/strong> and <strong>Washington<\/strong> already have such bans in place.
