Reisner, Class of 1889, Peter D. Manuelian \u201981 will become the first egyptology professor at Harvard since his predecessor\u2019s death 68 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Manuelian, currently an egyptology lecturer at Tufts, will be the first person to fill the Philip J. King Professorship, which was established in the fall of 2006 to support the study of ancient civilizations.<\/p>\n<p>The professorship\u2019s search committee specifically sought an egyptology scholar to fill the position, according to Classics Professor Christopher P. Jones, who headed the search.<\/p>\n<p>Ancient Egypt is an important academic area due to its ties to Biblical, Mediterranean, and particularly African histories, Jones said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is very important that Africa should be a part of what everyone thinks about the modern world,\u201d Jones said. \u201cAnd Egypt is a major African civilization\u2014probably the best known.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though Harvard offers the occasional course related to ancient Egyptian history, it has not had an egyptology professor since 1942, when Reisner died during an excavation in Giza, Egypt.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\">Egyptology News Blog, Andie Byrnes<img width='1' height='1' src='https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/6760875-7591046900958052044?l=egyptology.blogspot.com' alt='' \/><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Harvard Crimson (James K.
