Rick Perry-appointed member Don McLeroy leading the charge for standards more in line with conservative ideology. Some examples from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/02\/14\/magazine\/14texbooks-t.html?em=&amp;pagewanted=all\">mid-February profile<\/a> of the board:<span id=\"more-78211\"><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>McLeroy moved that Margaret Sanger, the birth-control pioneer, be included because she \u201cand her followers promoted eugenics,\u201d that language be inserted about <a title=\"More articles about Ronald Wilson Reagan.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/r\/ronald_wilson_reagan\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\">Ronald Reagan<\/a>\u2019s \u201cleadership in restoring national confidence\u201d following <a title=\"More articles about Jimmy Carter.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/c\/jimmy_carter\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\">Jimmy Carter<\/a>\u2019s presidency and that students be instructed to \u201cdescribe the causes and key organizations and individuals of the conservative resurgence of the 1980s and 1990s, including Phyllis Schlafly, the Contract With America, the <a title=\"More articles about The Heritage Foundation.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/h\/heritage_foundation\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\">Heritage Foundation<\/a>, the Moral Majority and the <a title=\"More articles about National Rifle Association\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/n\/national_rifle_association\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\">National Rifle Association<\/a>.\u201d The injection of partisan politics into education went so far that at one point another Republican board member burst out in seemingly embarrassed exasperation, \u201cGuys, you\u2019re rewriting history now!\u201d Nevertheless, most of McLeroy\u2019s proposed amendments passed by a show of hands.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Last night, McLeroy <a href=\"http:\/\/trailblazersblog.dallasnews.com\/archives\/2010\/03\/two-state-board-of-education-i.html\">narrowly lost<\/a> the Republican primary for another term on the board to challenger Thomas Ratcliff, while his ally Geraldine Miller lost her seat to another first-time candidate.
