December marked the first time in 11 months that buyers gained back negotiating power; for much of 2009, buyer discounts shrank as real estate markets across the country improved.<\/p>\n<p>One year ago, in January 2009, buyers negotiated a median 4.5%, or $10,178 off the last listing price of homes.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest discounts continued to be found in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zillow.com\/local-info\/FL-home-value\/r_14\/\" >Florida<\/a>, although buyers in several <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zillow.com\/local-info\/NY-New-York-Metro-home-value\/r_394913\/\" >New York City<\/a>-area metros also found relatively large discounts during January.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zillow.com\/blog\/files\/2010\/03\/image001.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18288\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zillow.com\/blog\/files\/2010\/03\/image001.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"387\" height=\"614\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, sellers continued to do well in several markets, with most buyers in places like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zillow.com\/local-info\/CA-El-Centro-Metro-home-value\/r_394559\/\" >El Centro<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zillow.com\/local-info\/CA-Stockton-Metro-home-value\/r_395134\/\" >Stockton<\/a>, Calif., paying more than the last listing price of homes sold in January.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zillow.com\/blog\/files\/2010\/03\/image0011.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18289\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zillow.com\/blog\/files\/2010\/03\/image0011.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"387\" height=\"315\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fewer for-sale homes experienced <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zillow.com\/local-info\/#metric=mt%3D6%26dt%3D1%26tp%3D4%26rt%3D14%26r%3D102001%2C394913%2C394806%2C394463\" >price reductions<\/a> in January than in December, with nearly one in five (19.8%) of homes for sale on Zillow experiencing at least one price cut as of the end of January.<\/p>\n<div class=\"feedflare\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~ff\/ZillowBlog?a=LeV39Ovhu9M:9B_2oOJ-wQc:yIl2AUoC8zA\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~ff\/ZillowBlog?d=yIl2AUoC8zA\" border=\"0\"><\/img><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~ff\/ZillowBlog?a=LeV39Ovhu9M:9B_2oOJ-wQc:7Q72WNTAKBA\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~ff\/ZillowBlog?d=7Q72WNTAKBA\" border=\"0\"><\/img><\/a>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the second month in a row, homebuyers across much of the country negotiated bigger discounts off the last listing price of homes than they had the prior month.
