According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mgive.com\/\" >mGive<\/a>, the company that worked with the American Red Cross to set up a text donation campaign in the wake of the disaster, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mgive.com\/2010\/01\/19\/mgive-press-release\/\" >more than 2.5 million people texted $10 pledges to Haiti relief in the week immediately following the earthquake<\/a>. And that was just one of many mobile giving campaigns that were created to help fund relief efforts. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"1225930_39667326\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e54efc2f80883301310f279c87970c \" src=\"http:\/\/clevelandblog.foundationcenter.org\/.a\/6a00e54efc2f80883301310f279c87970c-800wi\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 5px 5px; width: 122px; height: 129px; float: right;\" title=\"1225930_39667326\"><\/img> A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/Reports\/2010\/Internet-broadband-and-cell-phone-statistics.aspx?r=1\" >December 2009 survey<\/a><br \/>\nconducted by the Pew Internet &amp; American Life Project found that<br \/>\n83% of adults own a cell phone or smartphone and 35% of those owning a<br \/>\nmobile device had used it to access the Internet at some point. The use<br \/>\nof texting or SMS (short message service) has been popular with teens<br \/>\nand young adults for some time, but is now spreading to other<br \/>\ndemographics as well, as seen in the growth of services such as <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/\" >Twitter<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>In<br \/>\nlight of these changing demographics and the highly-publicized success<br \/>\nof the Haiti relief texting campaign, many nonprofits are taking note<br \/>\nof the potential of mobile giving. But while creating a text donation<br \/>\nprogram enables donors to give quickly and easily, there are some major<br \/>\nconsiderations for any organization examining the possibility of a<br \/>\ncampaign.
