{"id":387178,"date":"2010-03-03T17:01:37","date_gmt":"2010-03-03T22:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"tag:typepad.com,2003:post-6a00d8341c630a53ef0120a8f3ed8d970b"},"modified":"2010-03-04T15:19:59","modified_gmt":"2010-03-04T20:19:59","slug":"former-flipper-trainer-says-animal-parks-such-as-seaworld-provide-a-bad-education-to-visitors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/387178","title":{"rendered":"Former &#8216;Flipper&#8217; trainer says animal parks such as SeaWorld provide a &#8216;bad education&#8217; to visitors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/.a\/6a00d8341c630a53ef0120a8f42e13970b-pi\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dolphins\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c630a53ef0120a8f42e13970b \" src=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/.a\/6a00d8341c630a53ef0120a8f42e13970b-600wi\" style=\"width: 600px;\"><\/img><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>In wake of the <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/unleashed\/2010\/02\/sea-world-killer-whale-orca-trainer-death.html\">tragedy at\u00a0SeaWorld<\/a> in Orlando, our colleague Steve Lopez wondered if he had been a bad father by taking his daughter to the marine animal park in San Diego. &quot;Did I really want her to think that wild animals exist for our amusement,&quot; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/local\/la-me-lopez3-2010mar03,0,7894108.column?page=1\">Lopez pondered in his column<\/a> Wednesday morning, &quot;or that it&#8217;s OK to ride a killer whale as if it were a pony?&quot;<\/p>\n<p>So Lopez asked a few experts, namely, his marine biologist cousin,\u00a0San Diego SeaWorld spokesman Dave Koontz and <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/unleashed\/2010\/01\/grotesque-business-as-usual-in-taiji-japan-fishermen-in-the-cove-are-still-killing-dolphins.html\">Ric O&#8217;Barry<\/a>, a dolphin expert who is also one of the first animal trainers to work with killer whales in a show.<\/p>\n<p>Although Koontz told Lopez that visitors to marine animal parks receive &quot;a greater appreciation for these animals and the ocean environments they live in,&quot; O&#8217;Barry, who can be seen in the Oscar-nominated <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2009\/jul\/31\/entertainment\/et-cove31\">documentary &quot;The Cove&quot;<\/a> disagrees, calling it a &quot;bad education.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;There&#8217;s no connection between conservation and stupid dolphin tricks,&quot; O&#8217;Barry told Lopez.\n<\/p>\n<p>Not only that, but O&#8217;Barry claims that because big mammals such as orcas and dolphins have no privacy in environments like SeaWorld, they can often do violent things, sometimes to others, as we <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/unleashed\/2010\/03\/newly-released-witness-statements-offer-more-details-on-seaworld-trainers-orca-death.html\">have seen with Tilikum<\/a>, or sometimes to themselves.
