The March 4th<\/sup> protest scheduled to take place in 29 States across America in protest against\u00a0cut-backs in the\u00a0education system has\u00a0been interpreted by CNN<\/a>\u2019s resident expert as an attack against the overpayment of teachers. Steve Perry, CNN<\/a>\u2019s \u201cEducation Contributor\u201d suggests that the protests are a sign that \u201cThere needs to be some honest conversations about what\u2019s happening [in our schools].\u201d Without pointing his finger directly at teachers, Perry notes that \u201cThe system is being fleeced by the people within.\u201d Yet, there seems little other explanation in Perry\u2019s view than that the teachers\u2019 unions are the primary ones doing the fleecing, for, as CNN<\/a>\u2019s news<\/a> release quotes Perry, \u201cteachers\u2019 salaries make up 70 to 80 percent of schools\u2019 budgets. In order for school programs to survive, those salaries must be based on performance and revenue instead of union mandates.\u201d So the whole protest, it would seem was one being driven by students (the victims) against<\/em> the unions (villains). Despite the fact that this protest is being driven by teachers, unions and students in solidarity against education cuts,\u00a0 CNN<\/a>\u2019s man\u00a0uses the protest to push anti-unionism and performance pay. And it is telling that he can cite no higher authority on education than the CNN<\/a> business model:<\/p>\n

\u201cAt CNN<\/a>, you don\u2019t get a raise if there\u2019s no money. It doesn\u2019t happen that way\u2026If there\u2019s no money and you\u2019ve not performed well, then you do not get a raise.\u201d<\/em> http:\/\/www.hartfordschools.org\/contact.php<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

Thus, the real basis, on this point of view, is the fact that performance pay has not been implemented to kill unions and drive teacher pay down from the 70-80% of is budget that this labour-intensive institution has traditionally paid out in the past.\u00a0 Only when teachers can actually drive up revenue should they be entitled to raises. In a strange kind of way, Perry almost makes you believe for a second that the strike is based on a need\u00a0to put teachers on straight commission.<\/p>\n
