And it&#8217;s also one of the hazards of combining politics and economics.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cafehayek.com\/2010\/03\/not-terribly-original-of-me-but-it-must-be-pointed-out-to-the-gray-lady.html\">Econ Professor  Donald J. Boudreaux<\/a> wrote the following letter to the New York Times:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Paul Krugman says that it is &ldquo;bizarre&rdquo; during today&rsquo;s downturn to worry that unemployment benefits reduce people&rsquo;s incentives to find jobs &mdash; indeed, that this concern is even at odds with &ldquo;textbook economics&rdquo; (&ldquo;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/03\/05\/opinion\/05krugman.html\" >Senator Bunning&rsquo;s Universe<\/a>,&rdquo; March 5).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Prof. Krugman must count himself and his wife, Robin Wells, among those who hold bizarre ideas &ndash; or who, when writing economics textbooks, misrepresent economists&rsquo; views.&nbsp; Here&rsquo;s what they wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=dpTBdNGGrtUC&amp;pg=PA210&amp;lpg=PA210&amp;dq=krugman+eurosclerosis+unemployment+incentive&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=GiMUCFpvMz&amp;sig=vCcb2wkdXyBbx7wMDf_pjewae2U&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=FRORS-_BD8H08QaU9dz2BA&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=4&amp;ved=0CBQQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&amp;q=&amp;f=false\" >on page 210 of their jointly authored textbook <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=dpTBdNGGrtUC&amp;pg=PA210&amp;lpg=PA210&amp;dq=krugman+eurosclerosis+unemployment+incentive&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=GiMUCFpvMz&amp;sig=vCcb2wkdXyBbx7wMDf_pjewae2U&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=FRORS-_BD8H08QaU9dz2BA&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=4&amp;ved=0CBQQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&amp;q=&amp;f=false\" >Macroeconomics<\/a> <\/em>(2nd ed.), published in 2009: &ldquo;Public policy designed to help workers who lose their jobs can lead to structural unemployment as an unintended side effect. . . .&nbsp; In other countries, particularly in Europe, benefits are more generous and last longer.&nbsp; The drawback to this generosity is that it reduces a worker&rsquo;s incentive to quickly find a new job.&nbsp; Generous unemployment benefits in some European countries are widely believed to be one of the main causes of &ldquo;Eurosclerosis,&rdquo; the persistent high unemployment that affects a number of European countries.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Sincerely,<br \/> Donald J.
